Good news: Mexico, Guatemala and Belize to create tri-national nature reserve to protect Mayan jungle (August 16, 2025)
The Associated Press article explains how these countries united to protect the Mayan Rainforest. Though this is a historic move by the three governments, there is also some criticism that comes with how a train system (Maya train) may be expanded in this reserve. This is a story to watch!

Not So Good News: Illegal loggers profit from Brazil’s carbon credit project

This Reuters article breaks down how carbon credit systems in Brazil have led to increased deforestation by illegal means and how that has impacted indigenous communities. Though the intention of the carbon credits system is to protect the Amazon Rainforest, this article shows how that system may be causing more harm than good.

Interesting News: Understanding the diverse values of shade trees on cocoa farms in Ekiti State, Nigeria. (2025)
Zoe Brown and her team in the Ekati State of Nigeria and University of Oxford have looked at the social-ecological impacts that lead to shade tree retention versus deforestation as an economic tradeoff when it comes to the cocoa tree as a means of improved development and adopting sustainable agroforestry interventions on these farms in Ekiti and all of Nigeria.
